The skill is to think of landmarks. Every place has them. It can be a street sign, it can be a building, it can be a tree, it can be anything, so long as that something will continue to be there.

This skill made me one of the better navigators in my family; it typically only takes me one or two trips to a location to be able to find it again without help.

Also, thinking of patterns helps. Especially when combined with landmarks. "Oh, I remember it being three rights, a left, a right, two lefts, and then another right!", for instance, as a route will help you.

When all else fails, the magic of a GPS will be a lifesaver. :P

Butyeah. Basically, pay attention to the road, think about how it feels, and you'll do great. (Though...I'll admit, when it comes to reading actual maps...I'm probably one of the worst possible people. :P I'm a navigator-by-instinct, not a navigator-by-map. :P)

I think maps are just intentionally made to be hard to read so tourists will get lost and spend more money.
